Introduction – Breaking Boundaries
I see boundaries in the arts as paradoxical; it seems boundaries provide comfort, clarity, and definition from a logical left-brain perspective. Boundaries are less necessary in an artist’s expression, an excuse to break the rules and blur the lines between the confined borders.
When reviewing categories in design alone, I was astonished at the sheer quantities; this led to a sense of unease revisiting a story of lack of previous academic insight into Graphic Design. Taking an open-minded approach with curiosity helps ease unease and enjoy learning new things.
From the list, I selected categories linked to what I’m most drawn to and the best use across my business. These are Branding categories: Graphic design, Typography, Sound, Media, and Product Packaging Design, photography. I see much evidence of studios’ various skills across categories from week two tasks. Perhaps required as a tool kit to combine and create.
It would be interesting to explore the ‘pure’ categories; I would assume the categories blend often and when breaking boundaries requires additional elements infused by the designer, such as values and personality. I would assume additional skills and hobbies add a unique quality and character to their design work. This is the reason Lian Ng’s work inspired me; coming from a science background often wondered how I could merge science with the contemporary arts. This is a brilliantly smart way to blur the lines between ideas and ideals.
Blurring the Lines
His background has heavily influenced Lan Ng’s Mathematics and Computer Science work, often including mathematical algorithms, typography, and architectural references. I see this approach to be profoundly intriguing, a lighter captivating take on an often bland subject, in my opinion. Using structure and fluidity throughout his work, as he see this as harmonising polarising qualities to produce visually pleasing art.
Science & Graphic Design
Slightly off track yet related, a journal I found explains how the connection between visual art and science is in danger of being lost (Cheng, K. Rolandi, M. (2015). This example is a paper highlighting the use of graphic design and media in science to give voice to nature nanotechnology through visual media, graphic design, and illustration. A way of visually communicating the unseen through a convergence of science and graphics.
An additional article of interest is Alice Chung’s view of how chemistry and design share similar qualities; her view declares both chemistry and design are about shapes, structure, synthesis, and systems. (Cheng, K. Rolandi, M. (2015). Sharing the problem-solving processes in a similar.
Going back to Lian Ng’s work, a similar Idea and approach of an interdependent relationship between logic and creativity. I would even challenge that sitting within the boundaries of ideals would spark little if any, innovation at all.
Globalisation (in progress)

A review of Simon Manchipp of SomeOne from lecture 1.
Simon suggests assumed arguments against globalisation to be homogenisation of thinking. I find it difficult to understand how this effect would play out as we are a global nation, where communication, connection, and cultural differences instead of causing a sedimentary effect. Influencing synergy and the creation of something new.
My travel has been a positive experience in understanding the history, culture, and economic effects of design today and undoubtedly influenced my approach going forward. Communicating, meeting, and collaborating with designers and studios using a combination of local a global processes.
Simon mostly discusses the benefits of globalisation for his studio practice, such as the collaborative approach, fusion, and acceptance of different cultures, broad thinking, new idea generation, and approaches to people and thinking where
communication delivery to many
can be celebrated and embraced.
It seems most designers see a clear advantage to globalisation and respect and support local processes and design production where possible.
Sam makes it clear travelling for business plays a large part in interconnectivity. Volume is turned up as opposed to the idea of homogenisation. Finding travelling and being with people, and connecting globally is important and necessary for business.

Sees the benefit of using virtual platforms to ensure all aspects are covered in a particular brief. New print production, specialities a broader scope for collaborations.

Julian House and Adrian Talbot
I enjoy the quote by Adrian, “Anyone can do anything, from anywhere”.
Anywhere, laptop working, freedom to travel is very much the lifestyle I currently live, and I find it comforting and fitting with the freedom that comes with design and globalisation.
Globalisation Effects on Business
Globalization as a traveller and connecting with various clients worldwide will be crucial to my business and my values.
Although virtual and digital platforms allow us to connect easily across the world, being with clients, collaborator, producers, and suppliers is important and provide holistic encounters reinforcing a sense of community and collaboration for studios to showcase work and physically present pdf and proofs.
In some local project work and side projects, as well as creating a finished product is fed through local work. Client brief through interaction. Local is an easier way to communicate and collaborate to demonstrate proof. Week 2 tasks show the locations of the studio and production are locally set in a central location to allow for effective collaboration and communication.
Obstacles Faced and Overcome
I was somewhat overwhelmed and equally excited to see the vast design scope and where it is implemented. This would be challenging to focus on as many exciting topics exist.
Understanding of blurring boundaries, experimenting with unique design ideas, and appreciating the vast collection of categories and industries.
A solid understanding of globalisation and its effect on the studio and design and consideration of my own practice now and expectation for the future.
